Booster bottom seats are for older children who have outgrown their forward-facing seats. These seats are suitable to be used from 15 - 36kg.
These seats are essential for older children who have outgrown their forward-facing seats. A booster ensures that the vehicle's seat belt fits properly, providing crucial safety as your child grows.
When to Use a Backless Booster Car Seat
Children should transition to a backless booster car seat when their weight or height exceeds the limits of a forward-facing car safety seat. This usually happens when they reach 4 feet 9 inches in height and are between 8 and 12 years old. However, most children won’t fit properly in a vehicle's seat belt without a backless booster car seat until they are 10 to 11 years old.
For added safety, it is recommended that all children under the age of 13 ride in the back seat.
Signs Your Child Has Outgrown a Forward-Facing Seat
A child has outgrown their forward-facing seat when:
- They reach the top weight or height allowed for the seat with a harness (these limits are specified on the seat and in the instruction manual).
- Their shoulders are above the top harness slots.
- The tops of their ears have reached the top of the seat.
Types of Booster Seats
Booster seats generally come in two types: high-back and backless booster car seats.
- Both types do not include harness straps but are used with the vehicle's lap and shoulder seat belts, similar to how an adult rides.
- Backless booster car seats are designed to raise a child so that the seat belt fits correctly over the strongest parts of their body.
Most booster seats, including backless booster car seats, rest on the vehicle seat and are held in place once the seat belt is fastened over the child. However, some models of backless booster car seats can be secured to the vehicle seat using lower anchors or a top tether for added stability.
Installation Tips for Backless Booster Car Seats
When installing a backless booster car seat, always refer to both the vehicle owner's manual and the car seat manual for specific instructions.
- Backless booster car seats often include a plastic clip or guide to correctly position the vehicle's lap and shoulder belts.
- Ensure the lap belt lies low and snug across your child's upper thighs, and the shoulder belt crosses the middle of your child's chest and shoulder without touching their neck.
If your backless booster car seat has lower anchors or top-tether attachments, follow the manual’s instructions for proper installation.
